EMDR Therapy with Sojourner Counseling

Put painful memories behind you for a better future!

Are you or your child struggling to deal with painful memories and strong emotions, unwanted impulses, or harmful behaviors? Are you or your child feeling “stuck”? If so, then you or your child might benefit from Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. This therapy helps the brain speed up its natural ability to process and heal from traumatic memories and events, so you or your child can move forward toward a life that is not bound to pains of the past.

Common Reasons for EMDR Therapy

Those who seek out EMDR may be experiencing a variety of symptoms associated with trauma that leave them feeling stuck in the past and unable to move forward. If your or your child are experiencing any of the following, then EMDR therapy can be greatly beneficial:
– Feeling Overwhelmed
– Frequent Feelings of Hopelessness or Guilt
– Difficulty Completing Everyday Tasks
– Ruminating on Negative Memories
– Emotional Reactivity or Numbness
– Irritability or Aggressive Behavior
– Fear of People or Public Places
– Intrusive, Negative Thoughts About Yourself or Others
– Self-Harm or Destructive Behaviors
– Grief and Loss
– Sleep Problems

What is EMDR Therapy Used For?

EMDR therapy is an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD can result from military combat exposure, childhood abuse and neglect, sexual violence, physical assault, emotionally abusive relationships, traumatic injuries, natural disasters, and more. If you or your child have been diagnosed with PTSD, then EMDR therapy can be a useful resource for healing. EMDR therapy is also used to treat:
– Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Related Anxiety Disorders
– Adjustment Disorder
– Clinical Depression
– Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Take Charge of Your Life with EMDR Therapy

Wounds that stem from trauma can leave you feeling trapped in the past, keeping you from the life that you want to lead. At Sojourner Counseling, we are proud to have helped many clients process difficult life events and painful memories in a safe, compassionate environment.
Using EMDR therapy, we have seen people make remarkable progress toward healing deeply painful memories and harmful coping mechanisms, empowering them to take charge of their life. After completing EMDR therapy, our clients often make remarks such as:
“I feel lighter.”
“I feel freer.”
“It’s like a huge weight has been lifted.”
“It doesn’t bother me anymore.”

Our Approach to EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR therapy? This therapeutic approach consists of eight phases, all of which are tailored to the unique needs of our clients. Your therapists will spend as much time as you need on any given phase, and you can come back for as many sessions as needed to reach the level of healing that you want to obtain. These phases include:

Phase 1: History Taking – Your counselor will learn about your symptoms, treatment goals, and gather necessary information for tailoring your EMDR therapy experience.
Phase 2: Preparation – You will learn about what to expect during EMDR therapy, have an opportunity to ask questions, and fine-tune your treatment plan.
Phase 3: Assessment – You will discuss specific memories that you want to target during your session and establish a goal for replacing negative ideas surrounding these memories with positive ones.
Phase 4: Desensitization – Memories are recalled while you participate in bilateral stimulation (BLS) to encourage your brain’s natural healing processes.
Phase 5: Installation – Positive thoughts and emotions replace harmful thoughts and emotions using BLS.
Phase 6: Body Scan – Beginning at your head and ending at your toes, you are guided through a whole-body scan to identify stored stress so that healing can be fostered.
Phase 7: Closure – Your counselor will help you come up with ways to deal with negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviors between sessions.
Phase 8: Reevaluation – You and your counselor will decide whether you need additional sessions, and if so, you will set new goals for these future sessions.
