Does online therapy work?

Many clients wonder if online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy.

The good news is that various research studies have shown online therapy to be as effective as in-person therapy for a number of mental health concerns. Some examples of these findings include: · In 2018, the Journal of Affective Disorders evaluated several studies comparing the effectiveness of online therapy to in-person therapy for clients seeking treatment for depression and anxiety. The study showed online therapy to be as effective as in-person therapy. · The Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare conducted a review of studies and showed that virtual therapy was effective for treating PTSD, OCD, and eating disorders. · A review by the Journal of Medical Internet Research evaluated over 45 studies and concluded that virtual counseling was effective for treating depression, anxiety, and stress. Many studies noted these benefits, as well as cutting down on travel time and costs, greater flexibility and ease with scheduling, and widening choices for therapists.

Common Questions about Online Therapy

What platform will I or my child use for sessions?

We use a secure, HIPPA-compliant platform called My Best Practice. When you sign up for sessions, you’ll receive a link to the client portal to complete all the intake paperwork online. You’ll use this for pretty much anything—messaging your counselor, rescheduling appointments, accessing and uploading any documents, paying for sessions, and attending sessions. You’ll receive reminders from My Best Practice two days before your session and a link to access your telehealth session within the hour before your scheduled appointment time. We’ve chosen this platform with you in mind to make your online therapy experience seamless and easy.

Does teletherapy work for everyone?

While teletherapy has many benefits, it’s important to note that it’s not recommended for everyone. You or your child may prefer the in-person connection that in-office counseling allows. Additionally, some issues or mental health conditions should be addressed through in-person sessions. You may discuss any concerns you have about online sessions with your counselor; your therapist will let you know if online therapy is not recommended based on your or your child’s circumstances.

What if I or my child starts online therapy and doesn’t like it?

That’s completely okay. Again, some people may prefer to be in-person. If this becomes the case, talk to your online therapist about meeting in the office.

Can I start in person and then move online?

Talk to your or your child’s therapist about the desire to complete the first few sessions in person and then move online. Some clients prefer to make the initial session or two in person and then move to online sessions.

What if I live outside the state of NC?

If you currently live in the US, we’re only able to see clients within the state of North Carolina. Because each state has its own rules about therapy, our NC licensing board allows us to see clients within the state.
If you’re located outside the US, please contact our office. We’re able to serve some global workers or TCK clients depending on your current location.
