Being a Christian in college can be exciting, but also challenging. Many of your peers might judge the Christian way of life as outdated or even hateful, and you might find academic obstacles when learning about world views that differ from your own. You also have a lot that is competing for your time and attention, so it can be easy for your relationship with God to take a backseat.

This is why it’s important to make your Christian faith a priority while in college. Here are some practical ways to make this happen.

Spend Time with God Daily while at College

You’re going to have a lot to manage while in college, and it’s understandable that doing so while on your own will be hard at times. However, this is a great time to get closer to God, trusting in Him to give you the strength and wisdom to help you do all things. To keep your relationship with God strong, be sure to make time for Him every day. Here are some suggestions:

  • Pray Regularly: Set aside a time of the day that is devoted to prayer, like in the morning, noon, and evening. Talk to God about your day, praise Him for His goodness, and ask Him to keep you grounded in the faith no matter what obstacles come your way.
  • Stay in the Word: Make spending time in the Bible just as important as spending time in your textbooks. Even if you only read a few Bible verses per day, this habit will help you stay rooted in the Word of God.
  • Worship God Whenever You Can: From listening to Christian music to taking a few minutes a day to meditate on God’s presence, take advantage of every moment that you can spare to spend some time with God.

Get Connected with Other Christians

While it’s important to spend time with God on your own every day, it is equally important to surround yourself with other people of the faith as much as possible. Find out if there are any Christian groups that you can join in your college and find a good local church to attend. Be sure to also keep in contact with your Christian family members and pray together, even if you must do so from a distance.

Distance Yourself from Negative Influences

The people you surround yourself with are going to affect you, no matter how strong in the faith you might be. If you notice that some of your new college friends or acquaintances are bringing you down by belittling your faith or encouraging you to participate in things that are against God, then don’t feel ashamed about putting some distance between yourself and them. While you want to “let your light shine” and be a testimony of Jesus to others, you also want to guard your own heart, and there is nothing wrong with doing so.

Consider Christian Counseling

Are you worried about how to stay a Christian in college? Do you want someone to talk to who can help you navigate the challenges of adulthood from a Christian perspective? If so, then Christian counseling is a great tool to consider. Christian counselors can help with a wide range of concerns, ranging from anxiety and depression to time management, career counseling, and counseling for spiritual development—to name a few.
